Bij zijn huwelijk wordt vermeld: van 't Klooster Ter Apel. Hindrik Jans is van beroep osseheer (1774). In Westerwolde bezaten de boeren gemeenschappelijk de zogenaamde markegronden. Zoals de scheper de schapen hoedde op de heide, hoedde de osseheer de koeien op de markegronden. De osseheer blies 's ochtends op zijn hoorn, waarna alle boeren hun staldeuren open zetten. Alle koeien volgden de osseheer naar de markegronden om daar te grazen. 's Avonds kwam de osseheer met de koeien weer terug.
In juni 1775 overlijdt Hindrik Jans Putse, die osseheer is.
