Herman Heinrich Gels is op 28 maart 1899 geboren in Barger-Oosterveld, gemeente Emmen, en hij woonde met zijn ouders op de huurboerderij Hoofdstraat 175. Hij huwde op 4 februari 1933 in Schoonebeek met Maria Helena Mars die op 2 februari 1903 geboren is op de boerderij Hoofdstraat 67. Uit dit huwelijk werden in Nieuw Schoonebeek tot 1941 vier kinderen geboren:
1. Bernard Heinrich, geboren op 22 mei 1934.
2. Maria Elisabeth, geboren op 9 augustus 1936. Zij huwde met Joseph Scherpen en zij vestigden zich op de boerderij Europaweg 333.
3. Johan Bernard, geboren op 24 september 1938.
4. Bernardus Hermanus, geboren op 14 juli 1940.

Een broer van de nieuwe eigenaar van deze eerdere boerderij Wendker, genaamd Jan Gels, heeft in 1944 op dat erf een nieuwwoonhuis gebouwd. Hijis geboren op 18 februari 1911 te Barger Oosterveen, gemeente Emmen enwoonde met zijn ouders eveneens op de huurboerderij Hoofdstraat 175. Hij is gehuwd met Catharina Margaretha Alers die op 25 februari 1917 geboren is op de boerderij Hoofdstraat 245.
