Zijn vader Adrianus Sparnaaij (1793-1858), werd de rijkste man van Gouda.
Frans Simon breidde de zaken van zijn vader verder uit.
Hij bezat een pijpenfabriek, een kleingarenfabriek, een pottenbakkerij en een rederij. Daarnaast handelde hij onder meer in steenkool. Hij bewoonde het pand aan de Lage Gouwe, dat ook voor bedrijfsmatige doeleinden gebruikt werd.
In het museumgoud bevindt zich een schoorsteenstuk Saulus op weg naar Damascus, dat afkomstig is van het huis van Sparnaay aan de Lage Gouwe.
