    Volgens van Eyck hebben de ouders Geerlings de ramp overleefd. Hun oudste zoon Albert was vooruit vertrokken om dienst te ontlopen. Hun kinderen Wilhelm en Hendrikje kwamen bij de ramp om, de anderen bleven leven. De jongste, baby Alberta, sterft kort na de ramp.
    Volgens Ligterink man vrouw en 5 kinderen gered, 2 kinderen verdronken.
    Volgens van Eyck hadden zij $ 50.000 aan goud bij zich.

    Gerrit Geerlings, zijn vrouw Aaltje en de kinderen Hendrik Jan, Jacob, Aaltjen en Gertjen komen in 1856 voor in het lidmatenboek van Milwaukee. Daarbij staat de aantekening, dat zij in 1859 Milwaukee verlaten hebben.

    Geerlings was molenaar op molen Fortuijn in Hattem. Hij behoorde tot de afgescheiden kerk. Na Hattem verhuisde hij naar Apeldoorn, waar hij als bakker werkte. Hiervandaan vertrok hij naar Enter. Vanuit Enter is het gezin naar Amerika geemigreerd. Hij vertrok samen met zijn buren Lubbers en Hommers.

    In Enter huurde hij de molen. In 1850 woonde het gezin in Milwaukee, ward 2. Gerrit werkte als schoenmaker. In 1860 woonden ze in Milwaukee, ward 9 en dochter Aaltjen was getrouwd met William Tellier. In 1870 werkte Gerrit als schoenmaker, vermoedelijk voor zijn zoon Jacob.
