The Bancroft - Cross families and Maxson family all came to Dakota Territory together in covered wagons, arriving here in summer. They passed through Sioux City on July 4th and located in Lodi. Later on, they moved to Vermillion. Some located near Yankton. They did not stay there long however. Our folks brought cattle, ox-teams, grain and horses. The sioux Indians ravaged them several times (near wipe outs). Lodi was a trading post at first, but later became a nice little town. From there they moved to Calliope in 1882.

Thomas Marsden Bancroft (father) was born in 1848 and died 1897. was inducted in war 1864 and served in 3rd Wis. Cavalry. Mustered out in 1865. Served 4 yrs. in Government Geological Survey.

Went to Oshkosh, Wis. and married Alice Cornelia Cross. Allice Cornelia Cross (mother) was born in Oshkosh, Wis. on Jan. 6, 1859, died in Hawarden, Iowa- Jan 4, 1927. Married to Thomas Marsden Bancroft in 1873 in April. Left Wisconsin in May of that year.

Rev. P. N. Cross- was my mother's father (my grandfather). He was a member of Territorial Legislature. Held camp meetings all over South Dakota. Was in mimistry for 40 years. Was 90 years old when he passed away. They called him 'the Sky Pilot' all over South Dakota. He was in the Civil War as a young man.

Maria Marsden Bancroft (great grand mother Bancroft) was a daughter of an English Knight named Sir Thomas Marsden. She came to this country when ten years old with her mother and brother Thomas Marsden (Thomas died very young). Her home was in Yorkshire, England.Ther was property over there, but no one went back to claim it, so it reverted back to the Crown. Time had outlawed the ownership they said.

Delos E. Bancroft- (Great Grandfather Bancroft) was married to Maria Marsden in 1818. Came to this country from England when 11 years old, with three brothers and one sister. His fathers name was Delos also. They lived in New York and helped build the Erie Canal.Their children may still be there as they never came to South Dakota. We never heard of them again. Headstone census taken by Sioux County Genealogical Society says born 1840 - died Aug. 1896. He enlisted into the war of Rebellion on the same day as his brother George W. Bancroft. Battles his regiment fought during his enlistment: Battle at Clarksville, Arkansas on Sept. 28, 1864, Battle at Cear Lake, Arkansas on March 11, 1865

In Thomas M. Bancroft's pension application it states he had been disabled since May 24th, 1893. Also in his pension application dated April 10,1888 it states he received
a servere injury while in the service when his horse fell on him causing a hernia. He was treated while in the service for the injury at General Hospital at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in 1865 and in Ft. Scott, Kansas in spring of 1864.

T.M. Bancroft died Thursday afternoon at his residence on the North side. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss.Owing to the sickness of the wife of the deseased the services were held at the residence and made brief.
