Notes about John Stuart Foppes

Original text of the article in the Lowville Times Newspaper, Lowville, N.Y. Thursday, May 6, 1926.

Three killed by lightning:
Clarence E. Beckwith, John S. Foppes and Son, on Fishing Trip, Struck at Ferncliff Reservoir.

Struck by lightning during a sever electrical storm, which swept through the Mohawk valley Sunday afternoon, three residents of Ilion wee instantly killed at Ferncliff reservoir. Their bodies were badly burned by the bolt. The dead are Clarence E. Beckwith,47, John S.Foppes, 27, and Stewart Foppes, 7-years old son of the latter. So quickly did the storm break that the trio, who ha just arrived at the reservoir to join scores of others in fishing, sought shelter against a concrete pier. With a blinding flash the heavens were rent asunder and the bodies of three men were strewn about the pier.

Leonard Goodale, Fifth Avenue, Ilion, who had accompanied the three victims to the reservoir, had left them beside the pier abutment a few moments before, remarking he was going "to fish despite the rain". From a distance of 50 feet away he saw the bolt strike the group as they sat huddled together beside an abutment, and gazed in horror as the bodies were thrown about.

Game patroller Axel Johnson, who was patrolling nearby, and the caretaker of the reservoir, was quickly notified and an ambulance was called.
Grandson Daniel Foppes (1955) writes: Did you know John Stuart Foppes loved to play football? Somewhere, one of my siblings has a photo of him dressed in the football gear of the late 1900's or early 1920's. My great-grandfather (Stuart John Foppes) also loved the sport, more as a fan than as a participant. I do vaguely remember my dad and my grandmother telling the story of one game that erupted into a brawl in which both John Stuart and Stuart John came home with blackened eyes, bloody noses, and fat swollen lips. And they loved every minute of it. My Dad didn't play football but was like my great-grandfather an avid fan. My brother John played little league and junior and high school football until a neck injury ended his career. I did not play and yes, I am a fan. Paul did, I think, play little league and one year in junior high school and then lost interest. His son Derek Foppes played high school football as a star running back.

John Stuart and his six year old son Stuart Edward died as they were hit by lightning during a storm in May 1926 at Ilion, NY. We were told they were trying to hide under a bridge.

Daniel Foppes (1955) reports: "they were fishing in a boat on a lake with a third man. They fell in the water The two men were dead immediately, the little boy was still alive when he was found, but died enroute to the hospital, John Stuart's wife Sarah stayed behind with two little kids, Guy Batemann and Barbara (1925). This was the second time that my grandmother Sara had been widowed. I don't remember her telling me of the details of her first marriage. She decided that she was cursed as to marriage and never remarried. Apparently her family - the Bateman's - stepped in and helped with raising my father and aunt. The Foppes side of the family drifted away".
