Jan Edskes Smit verwisselde een rustig bestaan,dat in Meeden te verwachten viel met de vestiging in Hoogezand.Om de man in zijn tijd te plaatsen citeer ik uit het Smittenarchief: “was hij een man met een vooruitziende blik, die verlokt werd door perspectieven die de toenemende bedrijvigheid in de toen nog jonge veenkolonien Hoogezand en Sappemeer aan een ondernemende jonge man van zijncapaciteiten zou kunnen bieden ? Een toenemende scheepvaart, in verband met de afvoer van turf, een reeds gevestigde en zich nog steeds uitbreidende scheepsbouw, kon de oprichting van een goed opgezette smederij voorzeker wel wettigen.Hij heeft de stap gewaagd, toen hij slechts 22 jaar oud was (vergelijk Edske Kliphuis, hondervijftig jaar later!)en moet daarmee tevens als de grondlegger worden beschouwd van de ankersmederij, later machine-fabriek en scheepswerven van de firma E.J.Smit en Zoon te Hoogezand, sedert 1926 voortgezet als N.V.E.J.Smit en Zoons Scheepswerven te Westerbroek, Gem.
