op 2 mei 1957 emigreerde het gezin van Oepke vanuit Rotterdam naar Australië. In november 1960 kwam men vanwege heimwee terug naar Nederland. In maart 1963 ging het gezin naar Suriname. Oepke werd met een kort verband kontrakt uitgezonden naar Paramaribo, waar hij werkte bij een melkcentrale. In november 1964 kwamen ze terug naar Nederland.
