    De Nederlandse stoomschip SS Bennekom werd in konvooi OS 10 gebonden van Liverpool naar de Verenigde Staten. Op 31 oktober 1941, werd het konvooi aangevallen door de Duitse onderzeeër als commendant Heinrich Lehmann Willenbrock U-96 560 mijl W. van Fastnet. De Bennekom werd geraakt door een torpedo en zonk met het verlies van negen van haar bemanning. Op breedte graad 51° 20 N en lengte graad 23° 40 W in de Atlantische Oceaan.

    47 mensen, onder wie 3 passagiers en 4 legerkanonniers gered, terwijl 9 mensen bij de ramp om het leven kwamen tw :
    Ch R Drayer 1e stuurman; J Bimmel 3e stuurman; G Hoorn hofmeester; W M Pools koksmaat; W v/d Zwan matroos;
    Av/d Houwen stoker. De 1e stuurman Drayer behoorde aanvankelijk tot de geredden, doch overleed tengevolge van uitputting
    aan boord van een escortevaartuig (H.M.S Culver) en werd in zee begraven.
