Nieuwer-Amstel werd in 1795 gevormd. De gemeente werd in 1896 en 1921 deels door Amsterdam geannexeerd. In 1964 werd de naam gewijzigd in Amstelveen, naar de toen belangrijkste plaats in de gemeente.
