Arnemuiden kreeg in 1574 stadsrechten. De vissersplaats op Walcheren heeft 5300 inwoners, was tot 1997 een zelfstandige gemeente, maar behoort tegenwoordig tot de gemeente Middelburg. Arnemuiden werd in 1223 voor het eerst in een akte genoemd.

Slag bij Arnemuiden
In 1338 vond er de Slag bij Arnemuiden plaats. Tijdens deze zeeslag werd voor het eerst in Europa gebruik gemaakt van een handvuurwapen en enkele kanonnen. Toch konden de Britten, die deze wapens hadden, de strijd niet winnen van de Franse vloot, die numeriek talrijker was. De Fransen behaalden hun overwinning en veroverden de lading Vlaamse wol die naar Engeland vervoerd zou worden.

Klok van Arnemuiden
Dico van de Meer schreef een tekst over de klok van Arnemuiden, die door H. Mengers op muziek werd gezet en door Max van Praag in 1949 op de plaat werd gezet. Het lied kreeg in latere jaren opnieuw bekendheid toen de Havenzangers 'De klok van Arnemuiden' bezongen.

Vissersvloot
In de zeventiende eeuw werd de noodklok in Arnemuiden geluid. De haven verzandde en werd onbereikbaar voor grote schepen. De handel en de scheepvaart verdwenen, inwoners trokken weg en panden raakten in verval. Voor de aanleg van de spoorlijn van Vlissingen naar het Duitse achterland werd in 1870 het Sloe afgedamd, waardoor Arnemuiden geen verbinding meer met de zee had. De vissersvloot bleef bestaan, maar de schippers kozen Vlissingen of Veere als nieuwe thuishaven.
