Stad
Enkhuizen kreeg in 1355 stadsrechten. Het stadje aan het IJsselmeer kent een rijke historie. De schepen uit Enkhuizen bevoeren vroeger de wereldzeeën: via de Zuiderzee kon de Noordzee bereikt worden. De afsluitdijk bestond nog niet, die werd pas aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw aangelegd, maar de roem van Enkhuizen was toen allang verbleekt.

Geschiedenis
De omwalling van Enkhuizen werd aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw aangelegd, toen het de stad nog voor de wind ging.
Enkhuizen was de machtigste stad aan de Zuiderzee. "Als belangrijkste oorlogshaven aan de Zuiderzee was de stad het basispunt voor de Geuzenvloot," schreef Noortje de Roy van Zuydewijn. "Enkhuizen bloeide als centrum van handel en scheepvaart kort maar hevig omstreeks het eind van de zestiende eeuw en de eerste helft van de zeventiende eeuw." In deze tijd werd in Enkhuizen de Westfriese Munt geslagen en hadden zowel de Oost- als West-Indische Compagnie in Enkhuizen hun bestuurskamers en opslagplaatsen.

Krimp
Het verval van Enkhuizen begon door de oorlogen met Engeland in de zeventiende eeuw. Bovendien zorgden de verzanding van de havenmond en de concentratie van de handel op Amsterdam voor achteruitgang in Enkhuizen. De bevolking volgde het werk. Hierdoor daalde het inwoneraantal van Enkhuizen tussen 1650 en 1850 van 22.000 naar 5.400 inwoners.

Spoorlijn en pont
Enkhuizen bloeide weer op na de aanleg van de spoorlijn van Amsterdam naar Enkhuizen en de veerdiensten naar Stavoren en Urk. Behalve voor het personenvervoer werd ook gevaren met een spoorpont naar Stavoren die goederenwagons kon meenemen.
