Notes about Maria Hendrika van den Brink
De plaats Rhenen ligt aan de noordelijke oever van de Rijn aan een zuidelijke uitloper van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug. De plaats werd in 855 voor het eerst in een document genoemd, maar bij Rhenen woonden al veel eerder mensen. Men vond in 1951 een omvangrijk grafveld van 400 tot 700 na Christus.
Geschiedenis
In dit grafveld vond men Merovingische sieraden en gebruiksvoorwerpen. Een deel daarvan werd ondergebracht in het streekmuseum. Rhenen kreeg in 1258 stadsrechten. De stad was in de middeleeuwen van strategische belang, want het lag op de grens van het gebied van de bisschop van Utrecht en het hertogdom Gelre. De bisschop bezat kasteel Ter Horst. Dit kasteel in Rhenen werd uiteindelijk in 1543 afgebroken. In de zeventiende eeuw had de uit de Palts verdreven koning Frederik V er een zomerresidentie. Hij liet dit Koningshuis in 1630 bouwen naar een ontwerp van Bartholomeus van Bassen. Dit paleisje werd in 1812 afgebroken. Alleen een ingangspoort, een gedenksteen en een straatnaam herinneren nog aan het verblijf van de vorst in Rhenen.
Cunerakerk
Centraal in het dorp en al van verre zichtbaar staat de Cunerakerk. De kerktoren is een van de fraaiste voorbeelden van de laat-gotiek in Nederland. Naast deze kerktoren staat een rond 1450 gebouwde hallenkerk. De kerk had een voorganger. In de elfde eeuw stichtte men een eerste kerk in Rhenen. Deze kerk was in de middeleeuwen een belangrijk bedevaartsoord. De pelgrims waren geïnteresseerd in de relieken van de heilige Cunera. Cunera van Rhenen werd als maagd en martelares geprezen. Ze geldt als beschermer van paarden en beschermd tegen vee- en keelziekten. Bovendien is Cunera de beschermheilige van Rhenen. De laatgotische hallenkerk werd niet voor niets naar haar vernoemd. Na de reformatie verhuisden de Cunera-relieken naar Emmerik en Uden.
Tweede Wereldoorlog
Rhenen werd zwaar getroffen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De stad lag twee keer in de vuurlinie. In mei 1940 werd hevig gestreden om de naburige Grebbeberg. De bevolking werd geëvacueerd. Zij keerden na de overgave van Henri Winkelman terug in een zwaar gehavende stad. Bij de gevechten in 1944 en 1945 bij de bevrijding van Nederland werd de stad nog een keer getroffen.
