Notes about George Wilhelm Dammann

In de veertiende eeuw vormde het veer over de Zaan bij Wormerveer een belangrijke schakel in de wegverbinding tussen Haarlem en Purmerend. Bij het veer stonden enkele huizen, maar van een dorp was nog geen sprake.
Kapel
Aan het begin van de zestiende eeuw was Wormerveer zodanig gegroeid dat er een kapel werd gebouwd. De kapel werd in 1503 in gebruik genomen. Behalve de bewoners uit de omgeving maakten ook schippers die bij Wormerveer aanmeerden om van hun zondagsrust te genieten gebruik van de kapel in Wormerveer. De kapel werd in 1574 door de Spanjaarden verwoest.
Hervormde kerk
De Nederlands Hervormde kerk aan de Noordeinde 20 werd in 1637 gebouwd. In de houten kerktoren hangt een Hemony-klok uit 1662. Het orgel werd gebouwd door Hermanus Knipscheer.
Kaas
In de zeventiende eeuw groeide de kaashandel in Wormerveer. In het jaar 1700 waren er twintig kaaskopers in het dorp gevestigd. De kaasmarkt ontstond aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw. Halverwege die eeuw kwam er ook andere bedrijvigheid in Wormerveer.
Bedrijvigheid
Stoomkracht verving windkracht. Wormerveer kreeg fabrieken en pakhuizen en er kwamen nieuwe industriële bedrijven, zoals een rijstpellerij en fabrieken voor cacao- en chocoladeproducten.
