Notes about Maarten Koomen

De eerste bewoning rond Assendelft ontstond ongeveer zeshonderd jaar voor Christus. Men vond de restanten van boerderijen. Deze boerderijen bestonden uit drie delen: woonruimte, stal en opslagplaats. Deze lagen aan de rand van het kweldergebied. In de derde eeuw na Christus begon de zeespiegel te stijgen en trokken de boeren weg.
Heerlijkheid
De naam Assendelft werd voor het eerst in 1063 vermeld. De heren van Assendelft maakten in de middeleeuwen de dienst uit. Assendelft werd een heerlijkheid. Zij woonden tot 1617 op het kasteel Assumburg. Het wapen dat deze familie voerde, een wit paard op een rode achtergrond, ging in 1795 over op de gemeente Assendelft.
Lintdorp
Assendelft is ontstaan als lintdorp. Deze plaats heeft de langste Dorpsstraat van Nederland. De 7,2 kilometer lange Dorpsstraat van Assendelft loopt van het Noordzeekanaal tot aan Krommenie. Aan deze straat staat de door Adrianus Bleijs ontworpen Sint-Odulphuskerk uit 1888.
Monumenten
De Sint-Odulphuskerk vormt een mooi ensemble met de daarnaast gelegen pastorie. Aan de dorpsstraat staan nog drie rijksmonumenten: twee boerderijen uit de achttiende eeuw en een woonhuis uit de negentiende eeuw. Ook de watertoren uit 1885 is een interessant gebouw. Het is de oudste watertoren in Noord-Holland.
