    Batavia is de oude naam van de hoofdstad van Nederlands-Indië. De stad ligt aan de noordkust van Java, aan een goed beschutte baai, in een vlakke en op sommige plaatsen moerassige omgeving, doorsneden door kanalen en rivieren.

    Batavia kende een oude stad in het laagste en ongezondste gedeelte en een nieuwe stad, iets hoger gelegen, in moderne stijl. Het was Daendels, de opvolger van Lord Minto, die aan het begin van de 19e eeuw het initiatief nam tot de uitbreiding.

    Ten tijde van de VOC telde Batavia 30 tot 50.000 inwoners. In de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw groeide Batavia uit tot een stad van ruim 800.000 inwoners. In 1905 telde de stad 9.000 Europeanen, inclusief de daarmee juridisch gelijkgestelde "Indo-Europeanen". De Europeanen en de mestiezen vormden toen een procent van de totale bevolking. Als "gewest" telde Batavia in dat jaar 2,1 miljoen inwoners, waaronder 14.000 Europeanen, 93.000 Chinezen en 2800 Arabieren.[1] Aan het eind van de Nederlandsekoloniale periode werd het aantal van 1 miljoen inwoners bereikt.

    Batavia had in het verleden twee bijnamen: "Het kerkhof der Europeanen" vanwege de hoge sterftekans voor met name nieuwkomers in het tijdperk van de VOC en in de 19e eeuw "De Koningin van het Oosten" door de stedenbouwkundige schoonheid .

    Batavia bleef in Nederlandse handen tot 1942, het jaar dat Nederlands-Indië bezet werd door Japanse troepen. Batavia werd toen weer Djakarta. Die naam is definitief sinds de onafhankelijkheid van Indonesië in 1950.
