    Vreeswijk is een voormalig dorp en gemeente in de Nederlandse provincie Utrecht . De gemeente fuseerde in 1971 met Jutphaas en is nu de zuidelijke helft van de stad Nieuwegein .

    Het voormalige dorp was gelegen aan de rivier de Lek , waar het wordt doorkruist door het Merwedekanaal . De oude dorpskern aan de sluizen is redelijk goed bewaard gebleven.

    Deze sluis zou het oudste voorbeeld zijn van een pondensluis in Europa. [1] Dit was de belangrijkste innovatie die aanleiding gaf tot het moderne kanaal , omdat het twee poorten had, hoewel het een groter bekken was dat een aantal schepen tegelijk kon bevatten.

    De Lek lag normaal gesproken op een iets hoger niveau dan het kanaal dat naar Utrecht leidde en was in tijden van overstroming veel hoger, zodat het niet mogelijk zou zijn boten binnen of buiten te laten zonder het omliggende land te overstromen. De extra poort beperkte de hoeveelheid water die binnengelaten moest worden, zodat alleen het bassin verhoogd moest worden.
