Notes about Theodora de Ruiter

Soms ging de inname van een stad tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog wel heel gemakkelijk. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de inname van Amersfoort in 1629 door de Spaanse troepen onder leiding van Ernesto Montecuccoli. De aanval op Amersfoort diende als afleiding voor het Beleg van Den Bosch door prins Frederik Hendrik.
Den Bosch
De stedendwinger was op 1 mei 1629 met een groot Staats leger begonnen met de belegering van Den Bosch. Frederik Hendrik bracht in korte tijd een omvangrijk verdedigingswerk om de stad aan. De Spanjaarden konden de stad daarom niet helpen. Zij besloten tot aanvallen elders. Amersfoort lag midden in het Staatse gebied en zou na verovering als springplank kunnen dienen voor aanvallen op andere steden van de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden.
Ernesto Montecuccoli
De Spanjaarden kregen hulp van Ferdinand II. Deze Duitse keizer zond een leger van ongeveer twintigduizend man. Op 12 augustus verschenen de verkenners bij Amersfoort. Een dag later arriveerde het leger van Ernesto Montecuccoli. Hij eiste de stad op, maar de stad ging hier niet op in. Het gemeentebestuur had echter ingezien dat verzet zinloos was. Het leger van Ernesto Montecuccoli kon de stad een dag later met groot gemak innemen.
Voedseltekort
De Spaanse bezetting van Amersfoort heeft niet lang geduurd. Er was voedseltekort. Ernesto Montecuccoli had al het vee en de hele graanvoorraad in beslag genomen, maar deze voorraad was niet groot genoeg om zijn omvangrijke leger te voeden. De voorraden van het Spaans-Duitse leger werden aangevuld vanuit Wezel, maar toen deze stad op 19 augustus 1629 werd ingenomen door Otto van Gendt, werd de situatie in Amersfoort onhoudbaar. Ernesto Montecuccoli vertrok en daardoor kwam Amersfoort weer in Staatse handen.
