Notes about Gerrit Jan Fiks

Gerrit Jan Fiks, die uit een christelijke gemeenschap in Heerde op de Veluwe kwam, was kort voor de eeuwwisseling naar Duitsland vertrokken om daar als seizoenarbeider op het land de kost te verdienen. Daar leerde hij Amanda Hundgeburt kennen die evenals hij als dagloonster op het land werkte. Het paar trouwde een jaar later,woonde kort in Heerde, maar trok al snel weer naar Duitsland omdat daar de mogelijkheden om werk te vinden gunstiger lagen. Zij kregen vijf kinderen, waarvan Albert de jongste was. Het gezin was arm en had nauwelijks een eigen onderdak. Een jaar na de geboorte van Albert pleegde zijn vader zelfmoord, wat een grote tragedie was voor het jonge gezin. De wanhopige Amanda deed nog geen jaar later afstand van haar dochters Hermine en Johanne Ernestine en zoon Albert. Wat er met de andere twee kinderen is gebeurd is niet meer te achterhalen, waarschijnlijk waren zij al overleden, maar het is ook mogelijk dat zij zijn ondergebracht bij familieleden in Duitsland.
Aan de grens droeg zij haar drie kinderen over aan haar schoonfamilie, die er
voor zorgde dat de kinderen konden worden opgevangen in het jongerentehuis
Zandbergen in Amersfoort.
