Fens (Adrianus 1824 igv. http://www.drentsarchief), bedelaars-kolonist in het Tweede Gesticht der Maatschappij van Weldadigheid te Veenhuizen, aangeklaagd voor moedwillige brandstichting, uithoofde waarvan door ¥t O.M. de doodstraf tegen hem geeischt was, is door het Hof in Drenthe, na de verdediging van mr. J. (Johannes 1784-1857) Tonckens, vrijgesproken, als zijnde het niet bewezen, dat de in zijne hangmat uitgebroken brand opzettelijk was veroorzaakt, en evenmin, dat hij dien gesticht had. Bij dit en ook bij de beide onlangs gevoerde criminele processen tegen kolonisten wegens brandstichting, was het opmerkelijk, dat de kolonisten, zoo vele er voor den Hove verschenen, zich algemeen beklaagden over te karige voeding, terwijl zij er algemeen (enkele invaliden uitgezonderd) welgevoed en gezond uitzagen.

Adriaan Fens, oud 53 jaren, van beroep opperman, stond heden voor het gerechtshof alhier (Amsterdam) terecht, beschuldigd van moedwilligen doodslag, den 30en November 1877, op zijn huisvrouw, Aaltje Bijsterveld, gepleegd. Hij zou namelijk gezegde vrouw, bij een bezoek dat hij haar in de kraaminrichting bracht, moedwillig een bloedende wonde hebben toegebracht ter linkerzijde van haren hals, tengevolge waarvan hare bevalling zou zijn vervroegd, terwijl haar dood op 4 December daarvan het gevolg zou zijn geweest. Beschuldigde verklaarde tweemaal gehuwd te zijn geweest: nadat zijn eerste vrouw in November 1876 was overleden, hertrouwde hij den 28 Maart 1877. Omtrent de toegebrachte wonde verklaarde hij niet te weten hoe zijne vrouw daaraan was gekomen, hij had haar die niet toegebracht, misschien had zij zelf die veroorzaakt, hij had alleen met haar in de wachtkamer een woordenwisseling gehad.
