De Legende
Vermeldenswaard is het volgende verhaal over de beeldenstorm vermoedelijk in het jaar 1566 of 1572. Er zouden in de kerk van Westkerke twaalf gouden apostelen geweest zijn, die van een onschatbare waarde waren. Toenop een dag brak in genoemde plaatsook de beeldenstorm uit. Maar voor debeeldenstormen goed losbrak zouden de monniken 's nachts die twaalf gouden apostelen hebben begraven. In hoever dit verhaal waar is weet ik niet, maar dit werd mij onlangs verteld.
Westkerke moet men zien als een schilderachtig plaatsje waar het verleden stil is blijven staan. Het heeft tot 1816 een eigen bestuur gehad. Denaam is niet moeilijk te verklaren door de ligging van het gebied te westen van Scherpenisse, waarvan het kennelijk vroeger kerkelijk is afgescheiden. De naam stamt uit de tijd van de massale parochiestichtingen tussen1170 en 1270. Het dorpsbestuur bestond uit een schout en vier schepenen.Merkwaardig genoeg had deze kleine gemeenschap waarvan in 1642, 42huizen en schuren voor de dubbele honderdste penning waren aangeslagen en in1748 122 woningen telde, en een eigen dorpshuis. In 1602 of kort hiervoor is dit afgebroken en werd het hiervan afkomstige materiaal verkocht. Wanneer er weer een nieuw rechthuis is betrokken, is niet bekend, doch in1702 werd een "belle" voor de rechtkamer gekocht. Bij de opheffing vande gemeente lag de rechtkamer aan de noordzijde van de ca 6 huizen tellende dorpsstraat.
