      Het Westfries Archief is hét regionaal historisch centrum voor Westfriesland. Een professionele, publieksgerichte dienst waar (Westfriese) burgers, instellingen en overheden terecht kunnen met historische vragen. In 1974 spraken de Westfriese gemeenten met elkaar af om hun archieven over te brengen naar een streekarchief. Zij sloten een gemeenschappelijke regeling waarbij zij hun wettelijke taken ten aanzien van het beheren van historische archieven laten uitvoeren door het Westfries Archief. Het Westfries Archief is aangewezen als de bewaarplaats voor de oude archieven. Na overbrenging van de archiefstukken zijn deze in principe voor iedereen openbaar en beschikbaar voor onderzoek.
