    In de 19de eeuw was er een tuinder genaamd d'n Os Verbiest. In die tijd was het gebruikelijk de militairen met marsmuziek te begeleiden van en naar hun oefenterrein. Daarbij passeerden zij wel eens de plaats waar een zekere Mie woonde. Mie danste dan altijd voor de muziek uit. Op een zekere dag in 1875 danste Mie met haar geit. De geit maakte daarbij een ongelukkige zijsprong en kwam in het prikkeldraad terecht. Daarbij verwondde ze zich aan haar uier. Naar aanleiding van deze gebeurtenis werd meteen een liedje gemaakt en dat werd tussen 1875 en 1945 gezongen als vastenavondliedje. Na 1945 werd het tot vanstenavond-volkslied verheven.
