Het hevigste bombardement op de stad na dat van 14 mei 1940 vond plaats op 31 maart 1943. Amerikaanse bommenwerpers uit Groot-Brittannië voerden die dag een aanval uit op haven- en scheepsbouwinstallaties in het havengebied in Rotterdam-West. Behalve hun doel, het industriegebied tussen Keilehaven en Merwehaven, werd door de Amerikaanse vliegers ook grote schade aangericht in nabijgelegen woongebieden, met name in de wijk Bospolder/Tussendijken. Het dodental was 401. Ongeveer 10 ha bebouwd gebied en 8 ha openbare weg werden verwoest en circa 16.500 mensen raakten dakloos. Het bombardement staat ook bekend als het "Vergeten bombardement".
