Het 'Swaenshals' in Blommersdijk, dat in het laatst van de 16de eeuw wordt vermeld, was zowel de naam van een huis als van het gehele buurtje, waarvan het deel uitmaakte. Men had in het Zwaanshals in 1643 'de Witte Gecroonde Swaen'. In 1667 wordt het huis 'daer uythangt het Swaenshals' aan de Rottekade of Hofdijksche kade vermeld. Dit moet hetzelfde huis zijn dat in 1593 als De Swaenshals voorkomt. De naam staat waarschijnlijk in verband met de bocht, die de Rotte hier ter plaatse maakt. Het is echter ook mogelijk dat de aanwezigheid van zwanen daartoe de aanleiding was. Even noordelijker vond men het Zwaneneiland. Deze naam komt echter pas later voor en kan dus van Zwaanshals zijn afgeleid. Volgens de dichter Dirk Smits hadden op dit eiland veel stadszwanen waarschijnlijk hun winterverblijf. Een gedeelte van de Zwaanshalskade heette van 1889 tot 1930 Fabriekskade.
