Jacob was a minister who served a congregation consisting of families that had withdrawn from the state church. Naturally, the financial return from this work was meager, and he depended upon his farm for the main sustenance of the family.
As his sons grew older, they took over the farm work leaving him free for his pastoral duties. His daughter, Minnie, was not yet married and was a weaver of fine linen for the market. The income was a very acceptable addition to the family budget.
When free from governmental interference, the father and daughter conducted a boy's school in the weaving room. The boys, whose parents could not afford to pay for his service, were allowed to earn their way by working on the farm under the direction of the oldest son, Henry. This set the three younger brothers free to do other things.
The oldest of these, Johan Arnold, became a maker of brick and tile with the help of Gerhardius (Garret). Not only did they make brick and tile, but built the out of doors oven used in that day and covered the roofs of the houses with tile. This was a profitable business until the great depression that followed the industrial revolution of Europe.
Things grew to be so bad that in 1848, the two young men and a younger brother, lured by the gowing accounts of prosperity, sent by former neighbors now living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, decided to seek their fortune in the United States of America. (The 1900 Census says they came in 1847.).
Thoughts of the boys leaving was very difficult for the parents. William, the youngest boy, was now old enough to serve his country, and knowing that food was bad and also dangerous on the sea, they could not think of his enterance into the Navy. The older brothers smuggled him across the border into Germany and left for America..
All of the combined efforts of the family could finance was the fare to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and barely enough for the living expenses on the way. The brother lost no time in findng work. The oldest, Johan, worked in a brick yard, Gerhard learned the cabinet trade in a furniture factory, and the youngest was an apprentice to a tailor.
Gerhard was married in 1851 and moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1867, and established a potash factory. William went to Antioch, Illinois where he and his wife bought a summer resort known as The Ramaker House. Minnie, the only sister, married Hermanus te Beest in the Netherlands and later came to America, where she and her husband lived on a farm near Alto, Wisconsin.
