Notes about Hermanus Heugens

Herman Heugens ook wel Manus genoemd, wordt 18 maart 1739 gedoopt in Limbricht als zoon van Reinerus en Anna Erkens. Woont sinds zijn huwelijk in de Heerlerheide "Manus uit de Ganseweijde", verdient de kost als opperman in de bouw, heeft geen enkele bezit, het huisraad is later beschreven als 'eenige scherver van eerde schottelen'.
Hij trouwt 2 mei 1762 in Heerlen Maria Helena Neander, gedoopt aldaar op 24 juni 1737 in Heerlen als dochter van Christiaan Neander* en Maria Vernaus. Zij is een zuster van Anna Neander getrouwd met Willem Cordewener*. Uit het huwelijk van Herman en Maria Helena worden vijf kinderen geboren tussen 1763 en 1772.
Herman is 25 mei 1773 genoemd tijdens een scherp examen door Matthijs Sengen* als medeplichtige van de diefstal in Höngen bij Millen (in de akten Heuge genoemd). Op 1 juni keuren de schepenen de arrestatie goed en de opsluiting in het Landshuis van Valkenburg. Onderworpen aan folteringen tijdens het scherp examen 9 juni bekent hij medeplichtig te zijn aan een zevental inbraken. Opmerkelijk daarbij is dat hij nauwelijks 17 jaar oud al meegedaan zou hebben aan een overval in de Maasband en ook dat de inbraak in Immendorf waarbij de bewoners niet wakker geworden zijn een violente diefstal genoemd wordt. Hij beschuldigd ook andere mannen als medeplichtigen en bevestigt dit alles 11 juni bij de recollectie. Deze bekentenissen motiveren het gerecht om 13 aug. een doodvonnis te vellen, waarbij ze maar zes overvallen noemen, de bovengenoemde overval in de Maasband is weglaten.
Herman sterft, 34 jaar oud, op 18 aug. 1773 aan de galg op de Heesberg bij Heerlen.
Helena Neander gaat na de dood van haar man met de kinderen bedelen, zij overlijdt 13 mei 1795 in Heerlen.
