Notes about Wijnandus Smeets

Winand Smeets genoemd 'de Klauw' wordt 7 dec. 1739 gedoopt in Valkenburg als zoon van Franciscus en Anna Catharina Duijsings. Woont in Arensgenhout, is boer en over welstand is weinig bekend, maar in het gichtregister vinden we hem als koper en verkoper van land, echt arm zal hij niet zijn geweest.
Hij trouwt 16 okt. 1763 in Valkenburg Maria Catharina Moonen, gedoopt 13 juni 1741 als dochter van Simon en Joanna Catharina Habets. Uit dit huwelijk worden van 1766 tot 1774 drie kinderen geboren.
Op 1 okt. 1774 verkoopt Winand nog land. Korte tijd daarna wil het gerecht hem laten oppakken maar hij is er vandoor. Op geen enkele dagvaarding komt een reactie en deze blijvende voortvluchtigheid ziet het Hoge Gerecht van Valkenburg als bewijs dat de beschuldigingen waar zijn. Na aug. 1776 is hij bij verstek veroordeeld tot eeuwige verbanning en confiscatie van zijn goederen.
Maria Catharina Moonen hertrouwt 9 febr. 1782 bij de Hervormde Gemeente in Klimmen met de 25- jarige Willem Willems, gedoopt 30 nov. 1756 in Hulsberg als zoon van Joseph en Agnes Bruls. In de ondertrouwakte staat de bruid omschreven als 'verlaatene Huijsvrouwe wijlen Winandus Smeets'. Ze zijn dus 'voor de wet' getrouwd en er is geen katholiek huwelijk 'voor de kerk'.
Maar Winand is teruggekeerd, want in de Franse volkstelling van 1796 staan als bewoners van huis 24 in Arentsgenhout vermeldt: Wijnand Smeets, 57, bouwman en Maria Catharina Moene, vrouw. Van alle commotie die dat in het dorp moet hebben opgeleverd is niets opgetekend.
Winand overlijdt 9 okt. 1807 in Hulsberg. Maria Catharina Moonen en Willem Willems trouwen nu ook r.-k. op 17 jan. 1809 in Hulsberg en sluiten ook een burgerlijk huwelijk. Maria Catharina Moonen overlijdt 4 aug. 1811 in Hulsberg. Volgens notarisakten betreffende de nalatenschap had zij vijf kinderen die allen vóór haar zijn overleden.
