Koning Van Engeland Van Wessex 839-856 En Van Kent 825-856 Essex En Sussex)

Hij was de oudste zoon en de opvolger van koning Egbert van Wessex.
Op zijn verzoek werden zijn vier zoons ieder op hun beurt koning, om te voorkomen dat een te jonge koning op de troon zou komen.
Hij bestreed de Denen, die in toenemende mate invallen deden in Engeland. Hij behaalde een grote overwinning, waarschijnlijk bij het huidige Ockley.
Ook versloeg hij, samen met Mercia, Cyngen ap Cadell van Wales.
Na de dood van zijn vrouw Osburga in 855 ging hij op pelgrimstocht naar Rome, vergezeld door zijn jongere zoon Alfred.
Na zijn terugkeer in 856 en zijn huwelijk met Judith van West-Francië, een dochter van Karel de Kale werd hij afgezet door zijn zoon Ethelbald.
Alle zes de kinderen werden bij zijn 1ste vrouw Osburh verwekt.

Was eerst onderkoning over Kent, Essex, Sussex en Surrey. Vanaf 839 tot
856 koning van Wessex en afhankelijke rijkjes. Hij had te strijden tegen de invallen
der Denen, die hij in 851 beslissend versloeg. Tijdens een pelgrimstocht naar Rome
werd in 856 zijn oudste zoon Aethelbald tot koning gekozen en werd het rijk verdeeld
tussen Aethelwulf en zijn zoon.
