Heer van Grimbergen en Mechelen, bisschoppelijk voogd van Mechelen 1096/1110, stichtte in 1110 de abdij Grimberghe.
Neemt deel aan de eerste kruistocht. Ontgint na zijn thuiskomst grote gebieden ten noorden van Brussel en sticht daar in 1110 (of 1128) de abdij van Grimbergen. Het kasteel van Grimbergen lag op een 13 m hoge motte, bij de kruising van de oude landweg van Brugge en Gent naar Brussel, met de Zenne, tegenover Vilvoorde.
Vaderschap van Adela is gebaseerd op naamsverwantschap en op de steun die families uit het rivierenland later aan de heren van Grimbergen hebben gegeven.
