In de Scheveningsche Courant wordt aandacht besteed aan het overlijden van Petrus Jacobus Meijs.
De krant schrijft "dat een van Scheveningen's nijveren, meester in het smeedvak, aan de zijnen
plotseling is ontrukt."
De krant schrijft verder dat de smederij aan de Wassenaarsestraat van scheepssmederij werd
omgevormd naar een werkplaats voor de levering van fornuizen. De fornuizen werden geleverd aan
paleizen en aan de etablissementen van de badplaats.In 1890 werd een fornuis geleverd en
geïnstalleerd in het koninklijk paleis het Loo en het landgoed "de Ruijgenhoek". Door deze
leveringen kreeg de firma Meijs in 1892 het brevet hofleverancier uitgereikt.
Op een tentoonstelling in 1991 over het koninklijk huis in het Haags Museum troffen wij een aantal
facturen van de firma Meijs voor werkzaamheden in 1900 die waren uitgevoerd in het kader van een
algehele opknapbeurt van het paleis Lange Voorhout t.b.v. bewoning door H.M. koningin-moeder Emma.'
De smederij is sinds 1767 in handen van de familie Meijs. (zie ook IIA.2 Petrus Meijs)
