Hij zou namelijk op latere leeftijd wegens syfilis geen kinderen hebben kunnen verwekken. Volgens de geruchten heeft men toen in de directe omgeving van Willem III gezocht naar een geschikte kandidaat voor het verwekken van een troonopvolger bij Emma. De keuze zou op Jonkheer Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de RANITZ (1846-1916) gevallen zijn, de zoon van Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de RANITZ (1804-1884) en Anna Margaretha Jacoba FRANS. Deze had het in het Nederlandse leger tot ordonnansofficier van Prins Alexander en Kapitein der infanterie weten te brengen. In die hoedanigheid werd hij benoemd tot particulier secretaris en adjudant van Koning Willem III. Na de dood van de koning zou hij adjudant van Emma worden en later bij Koninklijk Besluit als Jonkheer in de adelstand verheven. In 1894 droeg Emma hem voor voor een bevordering tot Majoor, maar dit werd geweigerd door de toenmalige Minister van Oorlog SCHNEIDER (1832-1925). Na een bespreking in de ministerraad werd De RANITZ daarna zelfs met pensioen gestuurd, dit ten gevolge van een over hem uitgesproken vonnis van de krijgsraad. Koningin moeder Emma bleef echter vertrouwen op haar adjudant en schonk hem zelf een spel trik-trak dat zij geërfd had van haar man Koning Willem III. Ook was van Wilhelmina bekend dat ze toon-doof was. Dit is vererfbaar, terwijl bij zowel Emma als Willem III niemand in de familie bekend is die aan toon-doofheid leed. Vreemd, want de RANITZ had wel last van toon-doofheid. Ook was De Ranitz een goed tekenaar en schilder, zijn werk heeft veel gemeen met de werken van Wilhelmina. Außerdem stiftete sie 1944 die Auszeichnung Bronzener Löwe. Wilhelmina war Prinzessin der Niederlande (1880–1890, 1948–1962), Prinzessin von Oranje-Nassau, Herzogin von Limburg (1890–1948), Herzogin zu Mecklenburg (1901–1962) und von 1890 bis 1948 Königin der Niederlande. Sie war die einzige Tochter von König Wilhelm III. und dessen zweiter Frau, Prinzessin Emma zu Waldeck und Pyrmont. Wilhelmina hatte aus der ersten Ehe des Vaters mit Prinzessin Sophie von Württemberg drei ältere Halbbrüder, Willem (1840–1879), Willem Frederik Maurits Alexander Hendrik Karel van Oranje-Nassau, genannt Maurits, der nur 7 Jahre alt wurde (1843–1850), und Willem Alexander Karel Hendrik Frederik van Oranje-Nassau, genannt Alexander (1851–1884), von denen bei ihrer Geburt nur noch Alexander lebte. Alexander war über die erneute Eheschließung seines Vaters so erbost, dass er sich weigerte, die Halbschwester zu sehen. Er starb, als Wilhelmina vier Jahre alt war.
