    Het 1939 bevolkingsregister werd uitgevoerd op de manier als een volkstelling en bevat gelijke informatie. Een van grootste verschillen voor genalogen is dat de volledige geboortedatum werd op genomen in het 1939 bevolkingsregister voor elk persoon, terwijl de traditionele volkstelling die werden uitgevoegd in Engeland en Wales slechts de leeftijd van de personen opnamen.De informatie in deze collectie was verzameld onder het gezag van de Nationale Wet op Registratie van 1939 - een noodingreep aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. 65,000 tellers leverden de formulieren in voor de officiële registratie dag. Op vrijdag 29 september 1939 (Nationale registratie dag) werd van huishouden vereist om de vereiste informatie op te geven op de aangeleverde formulieren. Op de volgende zondag en maandag bezochte lokale tellers alle huishoudens om de formulieren te checken en verzamelen en verschafte identiteitskaarten aan alle leden van het huishouden.Van de 42 miljoen personen die opgenomen waren in deze collectie, zijn er nog 8,2 miljoen gegevens afgeschermd in verband met de privacywet en ongeveer 700,000 aanvullende gegevens zonder volledige naam. Gegevens zijn van personen zijn afgeschermd tot 100 jaar na geboorte van de persoon, tenzij gelinkt aan een geregistreerd overlijdensakte. Deze gesloten gegevens worden publiekelijk gemaakt en toegevoegd aan de online collectie op jaarlijkse basis.*De 1921 volkstelling is nog niet vrijgegeven en wordt naar verwachting in 2022 online gezet. De 1951 volkstelling is gesloten tot 2052.
