      Het is belangrijk voor genealogen te weten dat voor 1952 VS passpoorten over ht algemeen niet verplicht waren voor internationale reizen. Er waren maar tee periodes gedurende de tijdspanne van deze verzameling, waarin paspoorten modig waren om internationaal te kunnen reizen: gedurende de Burgeroorlog en de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Veel mensen, die internationaal reisden, zullen niet op geen enkele paspoort index voorkomen, om de eenvoudige reden dat paspoorten niet noodzakelijk aren. Paspoorten waren echter wel van specifiek belang voor genaturaliseerde inwoners van de VS, die naar het buitenland gingen, omdat paspoorten de kans verminderden dat hun geboorteland zou proberen hen vat te zetten of hun terugkeer naar de Verenigde Staten te verhinderen.

      Behalve deze paspoort verzameling, is het nuttig op passagierslijsten te doorzoeken. Hoewel iemand misschien geen paspoort nodig had om internationaal te reizen, zullen ze voorkomen op een VS lijst van inwoners.
