Notes about Bartholomeus van Eck

ECK (Barthold heer van) (2), overl. te Eck 25 Dec. 1405, zoon van Gerard (die volgt) en Emilia van Hekeren. Hij werd door hertog Reinald II van Gelder tot bevelhebber eener ruiterbende benoemd en nam 25 Mei 1361 deel aan den slag bij Tiel, door hertog Reinald III tegen zijn broeder Eduard geleverd. Hier werd hij, toen de hertog verslagen was, met dezen gevangen genomen en drie jaar te Nijmegen opgesloten, totdat hij in staat was het gevorderde losgeld te betalen. Ondertusschen vielen de Bronckhorsten, de partijgangers van Eduard, in Barthold's heerlijkheid Eck, waar zij het kasteel tot op den grond sloopten, en de kerk verwoestten. Nadat hij zich in 1364 uit zijn nijmeegsche gevangenschap had losgekocht, ging hij, met zijn gade, Catharina, dochter van Rutger heer van Alphen (Gulikerland) en kinderen (drie zoons en twee dochters) in Kleefsland in ballingschap tot in 1387, toen hij van Willem I van Gulik, hertog van Gelder, vergunning kreeg om in zijn vaderland terug te keeren, alsook om een huis te Eck te bouwen, op de plaats, waar vroeger het kasteel had gestaan.
Hij werd ook weder in zijn ridderlijke waardigheid hersteld en in het bezit der collatie van de pastorie te Eck gelaten. In 1390 verkocht hij uit geldnood aan Gerard heer van Culenborg zijn recht op de hooge en lage heerlijkheid van Eck, hem door den hertog ontnomen, met meer andere goederen te Maurick. Zijn zoon Johan volgt.
