Heilige, trad in het door haar moeder gestichte klooster te Nijvel, waarvan zij abdis werd. Zij werd een van de meest populaire heiligen uit de middeleeuwen. Haar cultus breidde zich uit tot in Duitsland en Polen. Haar hulp werd ingeroepen tegen ratten, veldmuizen en muizen, alsook tegen koorts, krankzinnigheid en reisgevaren. Vroeger werd wel te harer ere het zgn. minnedrinken gehouden, d.i. een herinneringsdronk bij het afscheid voor een reis. Gertrudis wordt voorgesteld als abdis met muizen op handen, hoofd, habijt of staf. Soms draagt zij ook een boek, een kerk of een klooster.
