In 867 tot (onder) koning van Aquitaine. Door giften van kloosters etc. probeert hij stemmen te winnen. (bijna burgeroorlog)
Op 8-12-877 door aartsbisschop Hyncmar van Reims tot Koning gekroond in Compiégne.
Op 7-9-878 door Paus Johannes de 8e in Troyes gekroond (mogelijk keizerskroning in Rome.
Wil tegen het opstandige zuiden gaan vechten, maar overlijd eerder (is ziekelijk). Wordt begraven in het klooster Notre-Dame in Compiégne.
