Note:
Since we are most interested in John R when he was married to Anna akaAnnie Jennie Oelmann we have attempted to gather any information abouthim.

It is not presently known when he and Annie were married. We do know thatit was before 13 August 1914, because that is the date of JD's, Annie'sfather, Will and in it she is referred to as Anna Harken. Most likely theearliest they were married is 1909 when Annie was 20 years old. Hersister Sophie was married in 1908 or prior and Sophie was 21 in 1908.

So we have the timeframe of about 1909 through 1912 to surmise what JohnR, age 30 to 33, was doing as an occupation and where he lived. In theprobate proceedings for JD's Will, recorded on 13 March 1915 she wasreferred to as Anna Harken of Austinville, Iowa but this is still notdefinitive enough to ascertain is they lived on a farm or in the town ofAustinville.

According to Richard Harken, phone interview 8/29/01, these bits ofinformation we know with some certainity. He, as did his siblings, inherited or received, prior to his father's death, 80 acres of farmland. This could have occurred as early as circa 1904 when he was 25. Weare also reasonably certain that he sold it. However, we do not knowwhether he made an attempt at farming or not.

We also know that he along with his cousin Reemt Harken owned a GeneralStore in Austinville, Iowa. It is reported that they sold from "soup tonuts and closthes", hence the assumption of General Store. It is reportedthat as time went on the relationship between the cousins deteriorated tothe point that they sold the store to Jimmy Voss. Sometime after the salethe store burned at night. Richard Harken estimates this having occurredcirca 1927-1928, or possibly as late as the early 1930's.

After the store ownership partnership, John R. owned and ran a Hatcheryand cousin Reemt became a General Carpenter.

The Nature of the Man: Richard Harken's recollections of his Uncle John Rwere very favorable. He recalls that his dad and mom, Corneal and Edna, did many things together with John R. and his second wife Grace. Theytook a trip to Minnesota and went to the Dairy Cattle Congress inWaterloo to name a coupleof events. Apparently, John R and Corneal had aclose relationship even though John R. was ten years older than Corneal.Possibly, the fact theat they were at one time married to sisters couldhave been a major factor. In this regard, there are several conjecturesthat could be made in the sense of "Historical Fiction". Put asquestions, they are: Did Corneal meet Edna because John R. first metAnnie? Did they perhaps have courting relationships with the sistersconcurrently? If they did it would have occurred circa 1912 because Ednawould have been 20 at that time.
