Notes about Adriaantje Rozendaal

Adriaantje (Jennie) Rozendaal, daughter of Peter and Jacoba (De Hoop) Rozendaal, was born April 25, 1881 on a farm near Langerak, Zuid Holland, where her parents made their living at farming. She attended a Christian school and Reformed church.

At age 16 she started working for a couple who had taken in a baby that had lost her mother shortly after she was born. Jennie did most of the work of taking care of baby Bets. In the summer she would milk cows out in the pasture, getting there by rowing a boat down he canal, sometimes taking Bets along.

In 1902 Jennie's brother Ben made plans to emigrate to America. Three days before he was to leave Jennie decided to go with him. They left behind their parents, six sisters and one brother. Even so, Jennie said it was hardest to leave Bets after she had cared for her for four years.

Jennie and Ben sailed on an American-Dutch liner from Rotterdam to New York and from there went by train to Pella, Iowa, where Mr. Terlouw met them and took them to his home. The following day their half-brother Willem picked them up and took them to his home on a farm four miles north of Sully. Willem had eight children so needed help. Jennie helped them until their oldest daughter was through school. Following that she was Ben's housekeeper. He lived five miles north of Sully.
