In the spring of 1881 when Dave J Aswegen was 13 years old he came to America with uncle and Aunt the Luke D Aswegen he had been working here and there makinghis home with his uncle and trying to earn enough money for his needs and saveto try to get his Parents and family to America after serveral years he had saved up about enough but wrote his folks and told them he did not have quite enough for them all if it would all rigth to send enough for Harm so he could comefirst so he would not have to go the army.. But mother wrote back and said no I have one in America now and if Harm comes we all want to come so Dave J went to his uncle Henry D Aswegen at Holland and asked him if he would loan him 40.00 dollars. so he could have enough money to get his folks and brothers and sisters from Germany..the answer was yes. so Dave and uncle Henry went to the depotat Holland Ia. and sent them the tickets to come to America so as soon as the letter arrived there was a hurry up to get out of Germany because Harm was 20 years old and was to be called at any time to the army in Germany they have a standing army and as the young men reach the age of 20 to 21 they are to go for two years. Harm was about to go any time and they did not want to leave him behind so the folks asked their neighbor Browoer Jaland if he would take care of the cow and few sheep and the chichens and the household furnishing and the propery so that they could leave through the night and he said he would gladly do sothey packed up all their clothing things they wanted to keep and could carry and walked out by night to leave for America they walked to the Station at Remels and took the little train to Oldenburg then from there they took the big train to Bremerhaven from there they sailed by boat on the Atlantic Ocean to Baltimore Maryland..In Germany they have three Classes of trains Low,Medium and Highclasto ride onit is mostly for people who or which they can afford so when they got to Baltimore their tickets had run out and there they were strandded theyhad to wait there while Harm soon wrote a letter to uncle henry telling him what had happend When Henry got the letter he went to the Holland depot agent andasked him what was the trouble that his brother and family was stranded in Baltimore Maryland he gave him enough money for the trip to Holland Ia so the depot agent said I will take care of ir right away so infew hours word came the Aswegens may so they were on there way again to Holland Ia. as everyone knew that they were coming most of the relatives were waiting and watching for them as the train was going though grundy center and stopped Mother looked out the windowand saw Luke and Grace at the Station so she called to all and said lets get off and they all went but dad first asked for their luggage and had everything unloaded at Grundy Center..Luke knew that they to get off the train at Holland and that Henry and his family would be waiting for them there so he sent word toHolland right away ..this was May 8 1886.. after a short visit with everyone the family all moved in with grandpa Dave J Aswegen and sister Jenna some of thefamily would go out and work where ever they could find worl through this timetheir neighor Brower Jaland in Germany had made plans to sell the household goods the cow and the sheep and the chickens he also sold the property after Mr.Jaland had sold everything and paid the morgtage that was left on the properly there was money left and he sent it to them in America.
