Sjaak was ernstig geestesziek, hij leed aan waanbeelden en was agressief.Mishandelde vrouw en kinderen. Hij had veel slechte periodes en is dikwijls opgenomen geweest in een psychiatrische inrichting. Het gezin was dan blij, even rustin huis. Hij heeft zijn vrouw en kinderen een hele avond lang onder schot gehouden met een pistool. Hij sloeg zijn vrouw soms zo hard dat haar ouders dochter met haar meeging naar de huisarts. Sjaak was suicidaal. Hij heeft eens zijn bovenlijf en handen op een gloeiende kolenkachel gelegd. Hij rende daarna met 15 graden C. het huis uit. De buren vonden hem, totaal verward.
Vaak was er thuis geen eten, omdat Sjaak zijn weekloon spendeerde aan alcohol. Hij was zwaar aan de drank. Eerste herinnering aan haar moeder van Wiea was dat van een huilende vrouw, naast een kolenkachel. Als kinderen uit school kwamen, stond hun moeder vaak al voor het raam en streek dan met haar vinger over haar lippen. Dit betekende dat de kinderen stil moesten zijn, omdat het weer mis was met hun vader ...

Uiteindelijk werd de situatie onmogelijk en is Sjaak uit huis geplaatst. Er is dan geen contact meer met hem. IN 1973 krijgt Wiea (19 jaar) telefoon van het ziekenhuis in Rotterdam. Haar vader is ernstig ziek en wil haar graag zien. Wiea bezocht haar vader daarna regelmatig. Uiteindelijk zal hij aan darmkanker sterven. Iedereen was blij dat hij ging sterven, hij zou hun nooit meer pijn kunnen doen.
Wiea vraagt aan haar vader "Weet jij hoeveel pijn je ons hebt gedaan? Weet jij hoe slecht je bent geweest?"Haar woorden koemn als een waterval.
"Sjaak zegt, ja dat weet ik, maar ik was ziek in mijn hoofd. Heel erg ziek in mijn hoofd. Vergeef het mij ..." Wiea: "Ja ik vergeef het je, maar ik zal het nooit vergeten." Toe gebood Sjaak haar om weg te gaan. Vanuit zijn sterfbed zwaaide hij nog. De volgende ochtend is hij overleden, alleen zonder een familielid aan haar zijde.
