One by one the hardy pioneers who helped to lay the foundation on which the South Africa of today has been built are disappering. During the past decade the deaths have been recorded of a few of those who were among the youngest of the Voortrekkers of 1835-36.
Among the latest of these who have come the their journeys end is a woman Voortrekker of Bokkraal, Marico, Mrs. Hester Maria Hurn (born Oosthuizen), and known throughout the Western Transvaal as Ou Ma Mill, who died on Sunday last in her ninety-fourth year.
She was born at Olifants Hoek, in the old Cape Colony, in 1829, and only seven years of age when her family trekked northwards into the unknown. Some other kinsfolk were prominent amongst the rugged Voortrekkers, one of her uncles being killed with Piet Retief in Dingaans Kraal.
In this connection it is interesting to learn from Mrs. Moerdyk, the architect of Durbans first Dutch Reformed Church (the foundation stone of which is to be laid on Saturday by the Minister of Justice) that the building is being erected (where is now the corner of Smith street and Cato Avenue), on the very spot where Piet Retief had an interview with some English Colonists before he proceeded to Dingaans Kraal accompanied by a resolute little band, one whom was Mrs. Hurns uncle. Mrs. Hurn was subsequently in the laager when Dingaans imp was beaten.
The Voortrekker maiden married an Englishman, Robert Hurn, who came to the Transvaal in 1868. They lived for a short while in Rustenburg, and afterwards in Lichtenburg district. Her husband died seventeen years ago, and of the nine children of the marriage eight are still living. With one of them, Mr. William Peter T. Hurn, who has the mill at Bokkraal, the old lady finally settled down.
Old Mrs. Hurn possessed a wonderful constitution, never complaining of a ache of pain, and although she was occasionally induced to take a tonic to keep her strength up, she would never look at any form of medicine. Her brain was active to the last, and upon her grandson, Mr. E Punter, trying to persuade her to take a rest, she replied: "Why would I sleep? It will be the everlasting sleep – the next one I have!"
The prophecy proved true. She went to sleep at eleven p.m. on the Saturday and passed away twenty four hours later. She was burried in the Bokkraal cemetary on Tuesday, by the side of her husband, and, over a hundred relatives and friends being present.
Mrs. Hurn was a sister of Mrs. Coulson, whose adventures in company with her husband formed the subject of a special article in the Sunday Times a few years ago.
Mrs. Coulson is 16 years younger that her sister, and therefor her reminiscenes do not go back to the very early days of the Voortrekkers but, having heard from her sister --- from her childhood --- so many tales of the terrible days of the past, she is well able to reproduce (and in respects supplement) more than one picture of the vicissitudes of the Voortrekkers, both on the march and after they had settled down in the fertile valleys of the hitherto unknown veld.
At present she is on the farm Rietkuil, near Marquard, OFS. Where not long age her husband was injured by an ox. He is not in critical danger, but the accident weakend the old gentleman considerably as he is now in his 88«sup»th«/sup» year.
