"Richard Philippe Marillier married Frances Clarissa Jane Ford when she was a girl of 15
years.
He must have worked in Grahamstown or near by for a time, for my mother, (her daughter)
was a girl of 6 or 7 years when he was sent to Somerset East as Assistant Resident Magistrate
(I believe) - or Magistrate.
I heard from Professor Cory, who called to see me as being the granddaughter of old Richard
Philippe Marillier and Robert hart, how beautifully Richard Philippe Marillier kept his records.
He said "You can be proud of your grandgather. I've never seen better written or more clearly
expressed records than his - a pleasure to read. I wish there were more like him"
My mother (Harriet, daughter of Richard and Frances Marillier) told me there were only seven
large houses (brick, I think she meant) when they came to live here; and also that it was only
when they came to Somerset East that she and four or five other children of the family were
baptised. She remembered it well. Whether Grandmother did not care to have it done before I
don't know, but a brother-in-law, an Anglican minister, baptised them. There was no church
built then"....
