Biologie, Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht en promoveerde aldaar in 1956 cum laude tot doctor in de wiskunde en natuurwetenschappen op het proefschrift: Regulation of the spermatogenic cycle in the common frog, (Rana temporaria). Zijn promotor was prof.dr Gregorius Johannes van Oordt (A2 XIa, blz. XX).
Assistent en hoofdassistent/wetenschappelijk ambtenaar (1949-1963), Zoölogisch Laboratorium Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht;1963 lector Algemene Dierkunde, belast met de leiding van de werkgroep Vergelijkende Endocrinologie, als opvolger van zijn promotor. (Het wetenschappelijk onderzoek van de werkgroep heeft zich onder zijn leiding vooral gericht op de hormonale regulatie van de voortplanting van vissen, mede in verband met de vraag naar de kweek van voor voedselvoorziening belangrijke vissoorten.). Gewoon hoogleraar in de Vergelijkende Endocrinologie (1968); emeritaat (1989).
Buiten Utrecht heeft hij wetenschappelijk onderzoek verricht aan de universiteiten van St. Andrews (1957) en Jeruzalem (1974 en 1979) en hij gaf gastcolleges in diverse plaatsen in Europa en Jeruzalem.
Naast verschillende bestuursfuncties binnen de Utrechtse universiteit, was hij onder meer voorzitter van de staatscommissie Modernisering Leerplan Biologie (1971-1974), voorzitter van de Biologische Raad van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (1987-1991); resp. secretaris-penningmeester, vice-president en president van de European Society for Comparitive Endocrinology (1965-1986); voorzitter van het Nederlands Comité van het Weizmann Instituut van Wetenschappen te Rehovot (Israël) (1986-2000); lid van het bestuur van de International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) te Parijs (1991-1997) en voorzitter van het IUBS-programma Reproductive Biology in Aquaculture (1991-1997); leider van het Nederlands/Israëlische Project betreffende de ontwikkeling van methoden voor de kweek van de Afrikaanse meerval t.b.v. ontwikkelingslanden (1980-1985).
Fellow of the Institute of Life Sciences of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1977); Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw (1990).
Hij was lid van het bestuuur (vanaf 1967) en voorzitter (1987-1997), daarna erelid van de Vereeniging der Familie Van Oordt.
