Willem II trad daarop in februari 1816 in het huwelijk met Anna Paulowna, dochter van Paul I van Rusland. Uit dit huwelijk werden vijf kinderen geboren

Willem (roepnaam "Guillot") werd geboren in Den Haag als zoon van de latere koning Willem I en Wilhelmina van Pruisen. Na de vlucht van zijn grootvader, stadhouder Willem V en de uitroeping van de Bataafse Republiek in 1795, trokken zijn ouders met deze 3-jarige eerst naar Engeland en daarna naar Duitsland.
Zijn jeugd bracht Willem door aan het hof van de koning van Pruisen waar hij een militaire opleiding kreeg en diende in het Pruisische leger. In Spanje diende hij onder Wellington in het Engelse leger.

Hij keerde met zijn vader terug naar Nederland in 1813. In 1815 werd hij troonopvolger. Hij nam dienst in het leger toen Napoleon ontsnapte en was Nederlands bevelhebber tijdens de Slag bij Waterloo waaruit hij licht gewond en in de ogen van sommigen zelfs als de "held van Waterloo" terugkwam.
