Notes about Bertila van Spoleto

Markgraaf v. Friuli (873), koning v. Italië (888), Rooms keizer (915). Na de afzetting van keizer Karel de Dikke (888) tot koning van Italië gekroond slaagde hij er aanvankelijk in zijn gezag tot in Midden-Italië te laten gelden. De hertog van Spoleto, Guido, bestookte hem echter en wist zich te Pavia te doen kronen (889) en door de paus tot keizer (891). Na Guido’s dood (894) werd Berengarius’ positie wat steviger door hulp van de koning van Duitsland, Arnulf van Karinthië. Wegens Berengarius’ onvermogen de invallen der Hongaren tegen te houden riepen de groten van het rijk de hulp in van Lodewijk van Neder-Bourgondië, die in 900 in plaats van Berengarius koning van Italië werd en in 901 tot keizer gekroond. Lodewijk moest zich echter snel terugtrekken en Berengarius werd onbetwist heerser en kreeg in 915 de keizerlijke waardigheid. Een derde mededinger op zijn weg, Rodulfus, koning van Opper-Bourgondië, versloeg hem bij Piacenza. Berengarius werd vermoord door een vazal. Geh. met:
