De opvolger van zijn vader als koning, Rudolf van Bourgondië, ontnam Hugo zijn erfgoed Neustrië. Na diens dood (936) dong hij niet naar de kroon maar liet een Karolingische schijnkoning benoemen, Lodewijk IV van Overzee, terwijl hij zelf hertog van Francië en Bourgondië werd (941). Deze gebieden vormen de kern van het kroondomein van Hugo’s zoon, koning Hugo Capet. Hugo de Grote en Lodewijk IV hebben herhaaldelijk oorlog gevoerd. 1e huw. 922 met Judith van Bourges. 2e huw. 926 met Eadhild van Engeland. 3e huw. 14-09-937 Mainz of Ingelheim met:
