Koning van Aquitanië (867), koning van West-Francië (877), gekroond te Compiègne door aartsbisschop Hincmar van Reims en te Troyes door paus Johannes VIII. Hij schonk vele kloosters, graafschappen en domeinen weg in ruil voor steun en verzwakte zo de macht van het koningschap. Kreeg te maken met invallen der Noormannen en opstand in het zuiden van zijn rijk, en overleed voor hij kon optreden. 1e huw. 862 met Ansgardis N.N., ovl. 880/82. 2e huw. met:
