11012305302  Karel van West-Francië, geb. 953 Laon, ovl. 22-06-995 Orleans, begr. Maastricht, hertog v. Neder-Lotharingen, neemt deel aan de vergeefse poging om zijn wettelijk erfdeel terug te vorderen (976), wordt verbannen door zijn broer Lotharius II nadat hij diens echtgenote Emma van overspel had beschuldigd, wendt zich tot Otto II die hem hertog in Lotharingen maakt (977), neemt deel aan de vergeldingsaktie tegen West-Francië (978), wordt daarbij tot koning van Lotharingen geproclameerd maar treedt niet sterk op de voorgrond, bouwt een versterkt kamp met bestuurscentrum, het latere Brussel, wisselt tijdens de Duitse troonstrijd na de dood van Otto II (983) herhaaldelijk van partij waarop het Duitse hof hem laat vallen en hij voor zijn Westfrankische aspiraties geen steun meer krijgt. Neemt de strijd op tegen Hugo Capet als deze tot koning van West-Francië wordt gekozen maar wordt uiteindelijk door deze te Orleans gevangen gezet (991). Geh. voor 987 met:
