Hijis aldaar begraven.

Hij was bootsman (1784), later stuurman (1787/88), op de “Vrouwe Johanna”, een koopvaardijschip dat onder schipper Hans Maak op de Levant voer met Rotterdam als thuishaven. Het komt voor op de lijst van schepen die te Amsterdam lastgeld betaald hebben. De “Vrouwe Johanna” was een driemaster met een 15 à 16-koppige bemanning bestaande uit, inhiërarchische volgorde: schipper, stuurman, bootsman, timmerman, zeilmaker, kok, matrozen, koksmaat en kajuitwachter. In 1784 komt de “Vrouwe Johanna” op weg met een lading zout van Porto Vecchio, Corsica, naar Rotterdam in het zicht van de haven op De Lind in aanvaring met een schip dat aan de grond is gelopen. Matthijs is onder de opvarenden die een getuigenverklaring ondertekenen. Eind 1787 begin 1788 loopt het schip van Matthijs, op weg van Smyrna, Turkije, naar Rotterdam met een lading katoen, zuidvruchten en andere koopwaar averij op bij zwaar weer op de Middellandse zee. (Zie bijlage.) De getuigenverklaringen van 01-07-1784 en 17-03-1788 ondertekent hij resp. met “Mateijs Eldes” en “Matteijs Elders”. De laatste handtekening laat een vloeiender schrift zien. Als stuurman hield hij het scheepsjournaal bij. In 1791 is Matthijs stuurman op de “Zeemanslust”, een eenmast hoeker die onder schipper Wiggert Bloot van Oostende naar Alicante voer.  Op 01-04-1791 is hij tijdens de  avondwacht verdronken in de haven van Alicante, door vissers gevonden en aldaar begraven.

in-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;">Matthijs huwde, gereformeerd, op 16-11-1784 te Rotterdam, ondertrouw op 31-10-1784 aldaar, met Jacoba Clasina de Lange, gedoopt op 30-12-1764 te Rotterdam, overleden op 24-11-1834 aldaar, wonende in de Krattesteeg. Zij was een dochter van Jan de Lange, gedoopt op 25-10-1740 te Rotterdam, wonende aan de Schiedamsedijk, en Neeltje Bol, jongedochter afkomstig van Dalem en wonende te Rotterdam aan het Haringvliet. De grootvader van Jan de Lange, Melchior de Lange, was afkomstig uit het landgraafschap Hessen-Kassel in Duitsland.

Bij die laatste gelegenheid erft zij een achtste deel van haar grootvader Willem Bol, zijnde 260 gulden, 7 stuivers en 15 duiten.
